The Mezquita is famous for its over 800 original Moorish red-and-white horseshoe-shaped arches topped by a second Roman arch to add height and lightness to what was the second-largest mosque in the world. A large Renaissance-Baroque cathedral was erected in the center of the prayer hall and is still used daily for Roman Catholic masses.
